Dean, School of Engineering, Science, & Technology

Virginia State University (VSU) is a comprehensive coeducational land-grant institution located on the southern border of Chesterfield County and northern edge of Petersburg, Virginia. VSU was founded in 1882 as the Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute making it the first fully state supported four-year institution of higher learning for African-Americans in America. Today, the University is one of Virginia’s two land-grant institutions. It enrolls approximately 5,000 undergraduate and graduate students, which over 90% are African American. VSU targets the total development of students from a wide range of academic backgrounds, and provides a wholesome academic environment in which students can study, learn, research and benefit from their interaction with its exceptional faculty. Virginia State University is committed to education on a personal level, and to public service, research, and economic and leadership development activities in the region, state and nation.

VSU offers over 45 baccalaureate and master’s degrees, as well as two doctoral programs. These degrees are offered within four schools: the School of Agriculture; the School of Engineering, Science, and Technology (SEST); the School of Business; and the School of Liberal Arts and Education. SEST enrolls approximately 25% of the student body in six departments namely, Biology; Chemistry and Physics; Engineering and Technology; Mathematics and Computer Science; Nursing; and Psychology. All of the engineering and engineering technology programs are ABET accredited, as well as the computer science program. The associate degree program in nursing is approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing. Within the School of Engineering, Science, and Technology, master’s degrees are offered in biology, computer science, mathematics, and psychology where the doctorate is available as well, the first Ph.D. at VSU.
